Thermal Conversions. Kw-hour into KW?

So i did some calculations, based off some numbers i found off the internet. My dad wants to replace his gas heat with electric, powered with solar energy…..i told him bad idea, but I attempted to estimate the cost….not sure if i’m doing it right.

I don’t understand the bit about mcf, CCF etc.

But 1 therm = 30kwhr

Let me assume he uses 100 therms/mo, you can change it as needed.

100 therms = 3000kwhr
At about $0.10/kwhr this is $300 per month, electricity cost from the power company.

Translating the 3000kwhr to kw, we need to divide by number of hours in a month, 720. to get 4.1kw

Solar panels seem to run about $4 per watt, NOT including installation, electronics, etc. I’d double it for the other costs. So $8/w

So you are trying to calculate the capital investment to generate 4.1kw

so for a crude calculation, multiply 4100 watts by $8, to get 32000 dollars.

But the sun doesn’t shine 24 hours a day. In the winter it is only 5 hours, so we have to multiply that by 5, or $160000.

But that doesn’t consider batteries and inverters to supply power when the sun doesn’t shine, and that could double or triple the costs.
